In 2012 Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize the recreational use of cannabis. As of 2019, thirty-three states, four of the permanently inhabited U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia have legalized medical cannabis. Globally, cannabis is legalized in forty-four countries, with four countries legalizing recreational use of cannabis.
